Born of the belief that positive experiences with animals can be life-changing, The Mustang Project was created with the following objectives and purposes:
- to provide a program for youth, especially those deemed to be at-risk, to learn about, interact with, and care for horses,
- to give participating youth the opportunity to gentle and train wild horses (Mustangs),
- to use this interaction with horses to increase awareness of and empathy toward animals and people,
- to foster a sense of accomplishment and self-worth among participants, and to provide an incentive for them to excel in all areas of their lives,
- to give participants the skills and opportunities to pursue a career working with horses if desired,
- to hold special events and distribute educational materials to increase public awareness about adopting and training Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Mustangs,
- to adopt BLM Mustangs for use in the program
- to directly engage in, and provide facilities for the promotion of these objectives.
