May 2009 - Nebraska Horse Seizure

We have arranged to take one of the more than 210 horses that were seized from a ranch in Nebraska on April 22.  The horses and burros were confiscated after a pilot flying over the ranch noticed a large number of dead horses on the property, and authorities investigated.  There were 74 dead horses and the remaining horses were emaciated.   Test showed the horses died of starvation and parasites.  Many of the horses were from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), who is bringing charges against the ranch owner. The only information we have about the horse we are getting is that he is a six year old gelding.  Once he gets here and we can take a look at his freeze-brand, we may be able to find out what BLM HMA (herd management area) he came from, when he was rounded up, and if and when he was ever adopted.  Here are two pictures of the horse at the fairgrounds:

He is being shipped from Nebraska to Lancaster, CA and should be arriving there today.  Many thanks to Lifesaver's Wild Horse Rescue for providing transportation.  He is scheduled to be picked up Monday or Tuesday and arrive here sometime mid week.
We'll post pictures when he gets here, and let everyone know about his progress.  Donations for his rehab are greatly appreciated.  See our BLOG for video of the rescue and for updates on his progress.

April 2009 - Horses in Need Update

We are happy to report that the owner gave the horses to other people who are now taking care of them.  They have been wormed and are putting on weight.  Yeah!!!!

March 2009 - URGENT!!!  Horses in Need!!

Help us help these horses.  These two horses are for sale by their owner.  We are trying to raise enough to buy the horses and rehab them.  it's hard to tell from the pictures, but the Clydesdale mare (on the left) is at least 300 pounds underweight and the gelding (on the right) is nothing but skin and bones, and is missing large patches of hair.  Our understanding is that animal control has already been called - over a month ago, yet the horses are still there.  Please help us before these horses die in their tracks.  The yard already had some bones scattered around, maybe from a goat or dog.  Anything you can give to help these horse will be greatly appreciated.  Please click on our "How to Help" button to learn how to donate.  Thanks, and God bless you.

February 2009 - Land

After a long search, we have found property that will be ideal for The Mustang Project.  It is 10 acres in Corning with a ag well.  The property will need quite a bit of cleaning up and some setting up before we can move the horses there or start using it for the program, but it has access to a safe place to ride, and there are an adjoining 10 acres that are available.  Our priority will be getting the fences repaired and providing shelter for the horses, but our hope is to put in a riding arena as well as set up pens so we can adopt a few more mustangs from BLM.  Having these facilities will enable us to provide a quality program for the youth of our community.   We need raise $35,000 by May and an additional $40,000 by February 2010.  The owner has graciously agreed to carry the remaining balance.  Although this seems like a large amount of money to raise, we believe God will provide if this is His plan for us!  For more information on making a donation, please click on the "How To Help" link on the left.

February 2009 - New Mustang

We just found out BLM will be bringing a gelding to us sometime this month.  He was adopted in 2004 but never titled.  After several compliance checks where the adopter was not in compliance, the adopter has finally agreed to return the horse to BLM.  We had informed BLM almost two years ago we would be interested in taking him if he were ever returned by the adopter.  We have had this horse on our minds ever since our first visit.  He will need to be vaccinated and have his feet trimmed, but first, he will need some time to relax once he gets here before we start working with him.  We'll keep you updated on his progress.  God has really answered this prayer for us, even after we had given up!!

This is the gelding that will be coming to us from BLM.  These are pictures of him prior to coming to us.  We will take suggestions for a name during the month of February, and his name will be chosen in March.

October 2008 - Artimus

On a sad note, Artimus, better know as Artie, went over the Rainbow Bridge the night of October 30th.  He seems to have died peacefully in his sleep after a very brief illness.  He was approximately 29 years old, and was a great babysitter and teacher for the "boys" as well as all those who had the pleasure to know him.  We miss his rumbling greeting every morning, and he has left a great void in our pasture and our hearts, but he left a legacy of knowledge and experience that will be with us always.

October 2008 - Annie B's

Once again we participated in Annie B's Fundraising Drive through the North Valley Community Foundation, and we received a donation of $24.13 with a contribution of $2.58 from the foundation.  We hope to participate again next year and generate even more in donations.  Thank you NVFC, and everyone who donated!!!

Sept. 2008 - Donation of Training Materials

Here at the Mustang Project, we were overwhelmed by a MOST GENEROUS DONATION by the Parelli Team!!!  The donation consisted of the Success Series and four sets of Parelli Patterns.  These DVDs will be used both by our volunteers and participants in making them better horsemen and helping them make our equines better partners.  Our belief is that horsemanship is much more than just riding, and these materials reinforce that philosophy.  A GREAT BIG THANKS to everyone at the Parelli Team!!!
